The Department of English at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University campus is committed to the enrichment of language and literature and to give an impetus to imparting in-depth aesthetic knowledge with an endeavor to develop proper skills and ingenuity in the students who join the University to avail themselves of the course. Apart from academics, the Department also focuses on curricular and extra-curricular activities for the students, including Quiz Contests, Seminars, Declamation Contests, Group Discussions and Annual Play production.
The Department Aims at
•    Providing comprehensive, historical and methodological coverage of the spectrum of English literary studies,
•    Ensuring to keep a way to new developments both within and outside the discipline.

1 English Language Lab

The Department is well-equipped with the state-of-the-art Language Lab with multi-media audio-visual aids. TheLanguage Lab has 31 computer systems with Clarity Snetclass Communication Lab Software. The students arealso given exposure to current activities in the outer world through documentaries and movies. To enhance spoken skills, special training is provided throughworkshops. The performance of the students is recorded and is shown to them so that they can improve themselves and build confidence to speak in front of camera. The overall personality development of the students is the main emphasis of the Language lab.

1 Trekking and Adventure Camp

The Department organized a trekking and adventure camp atRegional Mountaineering Centre, Mcleodganj from 17 October to22 October, 2013. 32 students took part in this camp. At the camp,the participants were introduced to the basics of mountaineering,through lectures and a demonstration of various kinds ofequipment. The students took part in various activities, such as rock climbing, wall climbing, rappelling, river crossing, andtrekking. During the camp, the students trekked to Ghera village,and Triund.

2 Translation of Short Stories by Students

The Department is working on a project of translation of ShortStories. The Students are given basic training of translation and areasked to bring stories of their own choice in any language. Theytranslate the selected stories in English. The faculty helps in givingthe final form to the translated stories. The Department aims at publishing them in book form.

3 Tagore literary Club

English Literary Club is for those who love literature for the sake ofliterature. It aims at fostering a passion for reading in students, andpromoting literary activities. It also aims at exploring the talent of thestudents as well as enhancing their confidence level by organizingvarious academic and cultural activities from time to time. The clubpublishes the English Literary Wall Magazine which aims at informingthe students about recent activities in the literary world.

Extension Lecture on “Effective Speaking Skills” By Dr. RanaNayar

The Department organized a guest lecture on “Effective SpeakingSkills” by Dr. RanaNayar, Professor, Department of English andCultural Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof. Nayartalked to the students about how to improve spoken skills.

Extension Lecture on “Role of Communication Skills” By Dr. Swaraj Raj
The Department organized an extension lecture on “Role ofCommunication Skills” by Dr. Swaraj Raj Singh, AssociateProfessor, Department of English, Govt. Mohindra College,Patiala. Prof. Singh talked to the students about communication,its necessity, and how to improve it.
