The Department of Political Science was started in 2015 with the aim to train the students in the fundamentals of Political Science with 30 postgraduate seats. The Masters programme aims to impart, through core and elective courses, both foundational as well as advanced knowledge to the students in the discipline of Political Science. The department seeks to promote, conduct and disseminate inter-disciplinary studies in the key areas of Geo-politics, Women issues, Society, Sikh Political Thought, Environment and Economy. The vision of the department is to impart quality education in order to integrate the theoretical, applied and engaged learning in Political Science. The department seeks to develop an effective, analytical and communication skills. Mission The Department of Political Science aims to prepare the learners with the learning experience that will develop capacity to address socio-political, geo-political, women issues of the complex modern society. The Department further emphasises to make the students as active and engaged citizens at the local, national and global levels. The Department provides political education that is embedded and strengthened by theoretical and philosophical traditions. This includes a strong background in the fundamental branches of our discipline: Indian Politics, Western Political Thought, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political theory, Governance and Public Policy, Security Studies and Geo-Politics. The students of the department have been encouraged to acquire research skills through project based research. Moreover, the departmental students would engage in extra – curricular activities which help them to cultivate leadership qualities. After the completion of the degree programme, the students would be able to understand, examine and critically analyse the contemporary political events and come out with practical and viable solutions to socio-political problems. In order to fulfil the mission of the University, the department has designed its curriculum in such a way to blend the knowledge with ethical values. Programme Objectives • M.A. Political Science develops an understanding of the fundamental principles and theories of politics, the structure and process of government, citizenship and forms of political participation, and the public policy process. • Foster an understanding and analysis of current political issues and concerns and their impact upon the contemporary political environment. • Offer students the analytical and research skills needed to understand, explain, describe & evaluate society, politics, governments, organized associational life and international relations. • M.A. Political Science offers a strong platform to venture into diverse field like academics, research, teaching, administrative jobs, journalism, work in national and international non- profit organisations (NGOs) and election campaign manager. • Along with it the graduation degree in Political Science acquaints students to inculcate various citizenship values like- empathy, cooperation, tolerance , leadership quality , make them responsible in nation- building and develop in them law abidingness. • It also inculcates values of debate, discussion and spirit of constitutionalism. • The Programme further emphasises to make the students active and engaged citizens at the local, national and global levels. • It will also develop capacity to address socio-political, geo-political, women issues of the complex modern society at national and international levels.
